ABOUT

Matthew Iacovelli is an artist, designer, and builder. A graduate of the High School of Art and Design, Matt has been drawing since he could hold a pen. During his formative years, he seamlessly transitioned from illustration to design, going on to study at the School of Visual Arts.

Matt’s art is greatly informed by post-WW2 history and current events. His grandparents, both avid collectors and pop culture fanatics, played a huge part in developing his interests. Amassing a huge collection of vintage newspaper headlines, magazine articles, and everyday consumer goods, Matt creates pieces in exacting detail on a large scale - in an almost obsessive manner - to draw attention to what might be lost, overlooked, or forgotten. His objective is to encourage the viewer to take another look, a closer look.

In addition to Andy Warhol, his influences extend from George Carlin’s worldview to Claes Oldenberg’s commercialism, from Jackie Mason’s humor to the pop sensibility of the Wizard of Oz. Matt is also a Beach Boys devotee, seeing them live in concert over 20 times - starting at age of 15. Their music provides the soundtrack when working in his shop.

Matt holds a BFA with a concentration in graphic and 3D Design. A Staten Island native, he now lives across the Verrazano in Brooklyn with his two cats, Barry and Susan.

He is currently a designer at SpotCo, a New York City advertising agency that creates artwork for Broadway and institutional theater.
